• This series is an investigation into industrial processes and materials. I work with plywood, layers of wood and glue that have been processed so much that it lacks the qualities inherent in wood. I excavate portions of this industrialized material using CNC routing, a computer-controlled industrial process that allows precise material removal. Through repetitive and recursive mark-making, patterns emerge as each layer of the plywood is uncovered. A rhythm of imperfections is displayed - gaps, knots, and glue lines - venerating the material. The substrate is uncovered to become the main element of ornamentation. Bright layers of birch wood contrast the brown hue of the glue layers holding the wood together. All patterns are derived from the perimeter of the wall relief, or the top plane if a furniture piece.
